Ashbourne Giants U21 take 2 from Comets to Move into Tie for First Place

The Ashbourne Giants travelled to the Peace Link sports facility in Clones, Co Monaghan to take both sides of a double header from Comets Baseball.

The Giants jumped out to a quick 5 run lead in the first game as they took advantage of a shaky start by Comets starting pitcher Forrest Pierce. David Linn and Feidhlim Deering walked to open the inning before shortstop Ryan Wiebe delivered a ground rule double to center field to score both runners. Three batters later, First Baseman Kevin Mitchell doubled to drive in Wiebe and Sean Mitchell. Mitchell scored on a “seeing eye” single by catcher David Casey. Shortstop Jason Beck took over at pitcher to get the final two outs for the Comets.

In the bottom of the first, Beck answered the Giants opening with a double of his own. He then proceeded to steal third and score on first baseman Shane Albritton’s single.

After holding the Giants quiet in the second, the Comets took advantage of some gaps in the Giants defense. The Comets loaded the bases on two Giant errors and a hit by pitch when Beck hits a line drive for a single to plate a run. The Giants almost get out of the inning with a potential inning ending double play but shortstop Wiebe commits a throwing error and another run scores. Third baseman Lloyd Clapp singles home the third run before the inning ends. 5-4 Giants.

After a scoreless 3rd inning, the Giants extend their lead in the 4th as Linn and Wiebe score. The Comets close the gap to 7-5 as Pavel Sury scores on a single by catcher Dominic Bartos. The Giants extended their lead to 11-5 in the 6th and 14-5 in the 7th for the win.

Ryan Wiebe led the offences going 3 for 5 with two doubles and 3 stolen bases. Kevin Mitchell also went 3 for 5 with a double. David Casey went 3 for 5 with a stolen base.

Giants pitchers Feidhlim Deering (3 innings pitched) and Caspar Coffie (4 innings pitched) gave up one earned run between the two of them.

Jason Beck was a one man wrecking crew for the Comets as he went 4 for 4 with a double, 4 stolen bases and 2 runs scored.

In game 2, the Comets jump all over starting pitcher David Linn as Shane Albritton hits a towering home run to open the scoring. The Comets then proceed to load the bases with 2 out when Pavel Sury strokes a single and Brian Corrihall draws a walk to score 2 more. 3-0 Comets.

The Giants tie it up in their half of the first. Speedy David Linn reaches first on a dropped third strike and later scores on a single by game 1 hero Ryan Wiebe. Feidhlim Deering and Wiebe go on to score later to tie the score at 3.

Looking for revenge for game 1, the Comets score 2 more in the second. Dominic Bartos opens the inning with a double to be joined on base by Jason Beck due to a dropped pop fly. The Comets load the bases when Shane Albritton draws a walk . After two quick outs, Lloyd Clapp hits a hard ground ball and reaches on an error by shortstop Wiebe. Bartos and Beck score to make it 5-3.

The Giants tie the game in the bottom of the third. Wiebe doubles to right field and steals third. The mighty David Casey draws a walk and then steals second to set the stage for pitcher Sean Mitchell. Mitchell strikes a solid single and Wiebe and Casey score to tie the game at 5.

The Giants breakd the game open in the bottom of the 5th. The Giants load the bases with 2 walks and a single. Sean Mitchell then steps to the plate and strokes a double to drive in 2. Adrian Donnelly drives in a third run on a sacrifice fly and Sean Mitchell scores on a passed ball. David Linn then strokes a hard double to drive in David McCarthy for the 5th run of the inning. 10-5 Giants.

The Comets fought back in the top of the 6th. Jason Beck scores on an Adrian Kelly single and the Pavel Sury comes to the plate with 2 out and bases loaded. Sury proceeds to single to left field to score Albritton and Kelly. Giants 10 Comets 8.

The Giants add an insurance run in the 6th as Patrick Mitchell scores as Adrian Donnelly grounds into a fielders choice. Caspar Coffie comes in to pitch a scoreless 7th for the save.

Sean Mitchell led the Giants offense going 3 for 3 with a double and 4 RBI. He also pitched 4 innings for the win. Ryan Wiebe went 2 for 3 with a double, a walk, 3 stolen bases and three runs scored. Patrick Mitchell went 2 for 4 with a walk, 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored.

Pavel Sury went 2 for 4 with 3 runs batted in for the Comets. Shane Albritton went 2 for 4 with a home run and Forest Pierce also went 2 for 4.
