The Wizard Keeps the Giants Guessing as the Mariners Win A Division Pennant

Woody ‘the Wizard’ Woodburne hurled a complete game gem to win the pennant for the Mariners.

The game was a pitcher’s battle as Woodburne and Giants starter Eduardo Hernandez kept things scoreless through 4 innings.

In the fifth, the Mariners get things rolling with back to back singles by shortstop Chuck Adams and right fielder James Kelly to set the stage. Centre field and Irish National Team Captain Leo Farrell singles to right to drive in Adams and advance Kelly to third. Kelly then comes home as brother Eric Kelly grounds out. Mariners 2, Giants 0.

Mariners add to their lead in the 6th as third baseman Tommy Hernandez draws a lead off walk and advances to second as Alex Caparu reaches base on an error. Hernandez advances to third as the Giants turn a classic 6-4-3 double play. After Adams draws a walk to have runners at the corners, James Kelly singles down the left field line to score Hernandez. 3-0 Mariners.

The Mariners add another in the 7th as centre fielder Eric Kelly reaches on an error. He comes home on designated hitter Dan Barclay’s single to extend the Mariners lead to four.

The Giants get on the board in the eighth as veteran shortstop Sal Rizo singles and comes home to score on Patrick Mitchell’s double. They add a second in the 9th as Hector Zambrano singles to lead off the inning and comes home on Ryan Wiebe’s sacrifice fly. It is too little too late and the Mariners win 4-2.

The Kelly Brothers lead the Mariners with 2 hits and a run scored each. Eric Kelly also had 2 stolen bases. Giants centre fielder Ryan Wiebe went 3 for 4 for the Giants.

Woodburne scattered 11 hits over 9 innings for the win. Neither runs scored were earned. Hernandez gave u 2 earned runs in seven innings for the Giants.

The two teams meet Sunday, September 27th in the A final.
