Code of Conduct – 28.03.2021

The following Code of Conduct was developed by Baseball Ireland and adopted by Ashbourne Baseball.  All members (coaches, captains, managers, players, umpires, parents and volunteers) and spectators are expected to follow this Code of Conduct.

PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Ashbourne Baseball player, I agree to abide by the following code of conduct:

  1. I will encourage good sportsmanship from fellow players, coaches, officials, and parents.
  2. I will be a team player and support my teammates.
  3. I will be on time and attend every practice and game that I can and notify my coaches if I cannot.
  4. I will always treat personal and team equipment with respect, ensuring that it be placed in the proper position in the dugout. Along with my teammates, I will leave the dugout neater than I found it.
  5. I will work hard to improve my skills.
  6. I will do my best to listen and learn from my coaches.
  7. I will accept victory and defeat with dignity
  8. I will obey the rules of the game and always work for the good of the team.
  9. I will respect opposition players and officials and treat them with proper regard for their rights, obligations and position held in baseball or the community.
  10. I will conduct myself with honour and dignity.  Refrain from making derogatory or demeaning remarks about any athletes, coaches or participants
  11. I will refrain from using profane, insulting, harassing or otherwise offensive language.
  1. I will not use social media to abuse or slander and will abide by Baseball Ireland’s Social Media Policy.
  2. I will act in a manner that that is free from harassment. Harassment takes many forms but can generally be defined as behaviors, including comments and/or conduct, that are insulting, intimidating, humiliating, hurtful, malicious, degrading or otherwise offensive to an individual or group of individuals or which creates an uncomfortable environment.
  1. I will refrain from the use of drugs, alcohol and any other restricted product while representing Ashbourne Baseball.  This includes at games, practices and similar events.
  2. I will perform any duties and responsibilities where I am a representative of Ashbourne Baseball in a mature, fair and professional manner.
  3. I will provide a safe environment for training and competition. 
  4. I will refrain from any form of violence or personal abuse towards coaches, players, officials, spectators or volunteers.

For players under the age of 18:

  1. I will focus on my schooling and maintain good grades.
  2. I will encourage my parents to be involved with my team in some capacity.

I also agree that if I fail to abide by the rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action levied by any Ashbourne Baseball disciplinary committee and/or the Ashbourne Baseball Executive Committee that could include but is not limited to the following:  

  • Verbal warning
  • Written warning
  • Player suspension for games
  • Player suspension for season including postseason
  • Player being expelled from the league

COACH CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Ashbourne Baseball coach, I agree to abide by the following code of conduct:

  1. I will uphold the rules and regulations of Ashbourne Baseball.
  2. I will uphold the rules of baseball, the spirit of the rules, and expect players to do the same.
  3. I will place the emotional, developmental & physical wellbeing of players ahead of the desire to win.
  4. I will treat all players fairly and equitably, refraining from discrimination with respect to race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, family status, physical or mental disability, gender or sexual orientation.
  5. I will treat parents, spectators, volunteers, opponents and officials with due respect and encourage players to act accordingly.
  6. I will consider the player’s future health and wellbeing as foremost when making decisions regarding an injured player’s ability to continue playing or training; communication with registered medical practitioners and the parents in the diagnosis is recommended.
  7. I will not use foul, profane, harassing or offensive language or gestures in the conduct of their duties.
  8. I will not use physical force in any kind in the conduct of coaching duties.
  9. I will not under any circumstances, endorse, recommend or suggest the use of performance enhancing drugs or supplements by any player.
  10. I will abstain from the use of alcohol at games, trainings and similar events and enforce the players’ code of conduct regarding their use by players.
  11. I will ensure and educate players as to their responsibilities in contributing to a safe environment.
  12. I will be aware of the academic, career and family pressures placed on players and conduct practices and games in a manner to allow for academic success.
  13. I will ensure an environment for players that is free of harassment. Harassment takes many forms but can generally be defined as behaviours, including comments and/or conduct, that are insulting, intimidating, humiliating, hurtful, malicious, degrading or otherwise offensive to an individual or group of individuals or which creates an uncomfortable environment.
  14. I will not use social media to abuse or slander and will abide by Ashbourne Baseball’s Social Media Policy.
  1. I will be professional in my appearance and manner and accept responsibility for my actions.
  2. I will perform any duties and responsibilities where I am a representative of Ashbourne Baseball/Ashbourne Baseball in a mature, fair and professional manner.
  3. I will provide a safe environment for training and competition. 
  4. I will refrain from any form of violence or personal abuse towards coaches, players, officials, spectators or volunteers.

I also agree that if I fail to abide by the rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action levied by any Ashbourne Baseball disciplinary committee and/or the Ashbourne Baseball Executive Committee that could include but is not limited to the following:  

  • Verbal warning
  • Written warning
  • Suspension for games
  • Suspension for season including postseason
  • Being expelled from the league

UMPIRES CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Ashbourne Baseball umpire, I agree to abide by the following code of conduct

  1. I will fairly call the game based on my best judgment of the rules as established by the league.
  2. I will communicate the rules of the game effectively to the managers, coaches and players.
  3. I will respond professionally when asked for clarification of rules and judgment calls.
  4. I will treat both teams and all players equally and fairly and ensure the rights of players.
  5. I will treat managers, coaches, other volunteers, players and parents with dignity. Attempt to pursue positive approaches to dealing with all parties.
  6. I will show good sportsmanship, a positive attitude and remember the real reason for the game: To have fun!
  7. Place the safety and welfare of the participants above all else.
  8. Avoid any situation that may lead to a conflict of interest.
  9. I will not use social media to abuse or slander and will abide by Ashbourne Baseball’s Social Media Policy.
  10. I will report to the League Co-ordinator any issues or problems beyond my authority or that I am unable to resolve.
  11. I will ensure an environment that is free of harassment. Harassment takes many forms but can generally be defined as behaviours, including comments and/or conduct, that are insulting, intimidating, humiliating, hurtful, malicious, degrading or otherwise offensive to an individual or group of individuals or which creates an uncomfortable environment.
  12. I will perform any duties and responsibilities where I am a representative of Baseball Ireland in a mature, fair and professional manner.
  13. I will provide a safe environment for training and competition. 
  14. I will refrain from any form of violence or personal abuse towards coaches, players, officials, spectators or volunteers.

I also agree that if I fail to abide by the rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action levied by any Ashbourne Baseball disciplinary committee and/or the Ashbourne Baseball Executive Committee that could include but is not limited to the following:  

  • Verbal warning
  • Written warning
  • Suspension from umpiring for games
  • Suspension from umpiring for season including postseason
  • Being expelled from the league

PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT

  1. I will not force my child to participate in sports.
  2. I will remember that children participate to have fun and that the game is for youth, not adults.
  3. I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or the safety of others.
  4. I will learn the rules of the game and the policies of the league.
  5. I will drop-off and pick-up my player on time for all practices and games.
  6. I will inform the coach as far in advance as possible of any absence or late arrival that cannot be avoided.
  7. I will remain away from the dugouts at all times, unless I have been asked to be there or on the field in an official capacity by a coach, umpire or official.
  8. I will volunteer to assist with any activity that needs to be done.
  9. I will abstain from the use of alcohol at games and similar events and enforce the players’ code of conduct regarding their use by players.
  10. I (and my guests) will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials and spectators at every game, practice or other sporting event.
  11. I (and my guests) will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent such as booing and taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or gestures.
  12. I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and wellbeing of the athletes.
  13. I will teach my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
  14. I will demand that my child treat other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability.
  15. I will act in a manner that that is free from harassment. Harassment takes many forms but can generally be defined as behaviors, including comments and/or conduct, that are insulting, intimidating, humiliating, hurtful, malicious, degrading or otherwise offensive to an individual or group of individuals or which creates an uncomfortable environment.
  16. I will teach my child that doing one’s best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance.
  17. I will praise my child for competing fairly and trying hard, and make my child feel like a winner every time. 
  18. I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participants for making a mistake or losing a competition.
  19. I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning.
  20. I will also de-emphasize games and competition in the lower age groups.
  21. I will promote the emotional and physical wellbeing of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my child to win.
  22. I will not use social media to abuse or slander and will abide by Ashbourne Baseball’s Social Media Policy.
  23. I will respect the officials and their authority during games and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at the game field, and will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place.
  24. I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from drugs and alcohol and I will refrain from their use at all sports events.
  25. I will refrain from coaching my child or other players during games and practices unless I am one of the official coaches of the team.
  26. I will refrain from any form of violence or personal abuse towards coaches, players, officials, spectators or volunteers.

I also agree that if I fail to abide by the rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action levied by any Ashbourne Baseball disciplinary committee and/or the Ashbourne Baseball Executive Committee that could include but is not limited to the following:

  • Verbal warning
  • Written warning
  • Request to not attend for several games
  • Request to not attend for remainder season including postseason
  • Player suspension from games
  • Player suspension for remainder season including postseason
  • Player expulsion from the league

SPECTATOR/VOLUNTEER CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Ashbourne Baseball spectator/volunteer I agree to abide by the following code of conduct:

  1. I will have realistic expectations for both our players, coaches and umpires.
  2. I will not shout any demeaning, rude or abusive comments at a player, coach or umpire.
  3. I will not Intimidate or threaten a player, coach or umpire.
  4. I will not harass an umpire over his/her calls.
  5. I will not use foul language that disrupts the environment of the game for participants and fans.
  6. I will not make loud comments or reacting in a manner that undermines the decisions and authority of a coach or umpire.
  7. I will not use social media to abuse or slander and will abide by Ashbourne Baseball’s Social Media Policy.
  8. I will not engage in verbal or physical conflicts with other parents or fans.
  9. I will not use alcohol or drugs at or near the playing field.
  10. I will act in a manner that that is free from harassment. Harassment takes many forms but can generally be defined as behaviours, including comments and/or conduct, that are insulting, intimidating, humiliating, hurtful, malicious, degrading or otherwise offensive to an individual or group of individuals or which creates an uncomfortable environment.
  11. I will refrain from any form of violence or personal abuse towards coaches, players, officials, spectators or volunteers.

I also agree that if I fail to abide by the rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action levied by any Ashbourne Baseball disciplinary committee and/or the Ashbourne Baseball Executive Committee that could include but is not limited to the following:

  • Verbal warning
  • Written warning
  • Request to not attend for several games
  • Request to not attend for remainder season including postseason
  • Associated player suspension from games
  • Associated player suspension for remainder season including postseason
  • Associated player expulsion from the league
  • Involvement of police or other officials as required
