The Ashbourne Giants moved to 3-0 in the A Division of the Irish Baseball League, defeating the previously undefeated Mariners Baseball 14-12.
The balls were flying in the high scoring affair with the Giants and Mariners collecting 20 and 15 hits respectively.
The Mariners got off to a quick start 3-0 in the top of the first inning. The two teams traded single runs in the 4th and 5th inning as the Giants had trouble solving Mariner magician Dan ‘’Woody’ Woodburne.
The Giants started to come back in the 6th when they scored two to drive Woodburne from the game to make the score 5-4 Mariners. The bats then came alive for both teams.
The Mariners scored 4 runs in the top of the 7th to establish a 5 run lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Giants scored 6 to take a 10-9 lead with Ryan Wiebe driving in two with a triple to right field.
Not to be outdone, the Mariners scored 3 in the top of the 8th to take a 12-10 lead with Dan Sweatland driving in two on a double over left fielder Hector Zambrano’s head. In the bottom of the eighth, Diego Corvalan drove in two runs with a single up the middle to tie the game. Fionn Gallahar-Hall then drove in the eventual game winner with a single to right field.
Diego Corvalan led the Giants attack getting on base all 5 times he came to the plate. He finished the day with 3 hits, a walk, a hit by pitch, 3 runs and 2 stolen bases. Dan Sweatland had a big day at the plate for the Mariners going 5 for 6 with 3 doubles, 3 stolen bases and 3 RBIs.
